Recently I’ve been overwhelmed with the lot of life. Pressing concerns have been pushing on my patience and it feels like I’m going to drown in all the confusion, fear, and sadness. Luckily, I have my friends and family there to help me through it by offering advice as the days go on. It’s easy to start looking at life as a giant ball of to-do lists. They pile on top of each other and before you know it, you have this giant mess of things you feel like you have to do. Instead of simply taking a step back we let the entirety of it all take over our minds. This is when things take a turn for the worst.
The best advice that has ever been given to me is to take it one step at a time. If you can’t handle the month, take it by the week. If you can’t handle that terrifying week, take it day by day. And if you can’t manage that, take it minute by minute. Whatever you need to get through your life, you do it. This isn’t something that’s kept secret or hidden away for only certain people to know. It’s something we can all try everyday. There are no special steps or requirements. All that is needed from us is to sit and feel the quiet. I know this sounds like “guru” talk, but hear me out.
When you’re feeling too much and you’re just simply overwhelmed, try sitting in the silence and telling yourself, I can make it through this, by living life one moment at a time. It may not be much, but it’s a start. It was certainly what I needed to hear at many terrible times in my life. As long as we remember to step back and realign ourselves, we will see that we are on the right track. Writing this out has even reminded myself that I need to really step back and take a look at what my life is really about and where I want to go from here. Moving forward…here we go.
